Lighting DesigN

Studio Formichella offers lighting design and sourcing throughout New York City and beyond, bringing together sculptural fixtures, ambient light, and architectural details to shape how a space looks and feels.

our Lighting Design Process

01
Discovery

To begin, we look at the architecture, natural light, and the way you move through the space from morning to night. We consider what is already there, where more light is needed, and where the right fixture could become part of the story of the room.

02
Curation

This is where we start sourcing. We look for lighting with character, whether that means a sculptural chandelier, vintage sconces, understated task lighting, or something made specifically for the space.

Scale, placement, material, warmth, and the relationship between fixtures are all considered together so the lighting feels layered rather than overly planned.

03
Installation

We coordinate procurement, placement, and installation with our trusted electricians, fabricators, and craftspeople. Once everything is in place, we make the final adjustments so the lighting feels just as considered at night as the space does during the day.

studio formichella Specialties

From a single statement fixture to a full-home lighting scheme, we think about light as both something you experience and something you live with every day.

We never want a room to feel like it was lit by a single idea.

Some fixtures should disappear into the architecture while others deserve to hold their own as objects. We love that tension — pairing something sculptural with something quiet, mixing old and new, and using light to reveal color, texture, art, and material in different ways throughout the day.

As a deliberately small, hands-on studio, we approach lighting as part of the larger design story rather than something added at the end. Every fixture is considered in relationship to the room around it and, most importantly, to the way our clients actually live.

Our Approach

FAQs

Do you offer lighting design as a standalone service?

1

Yes. Depending on the scope, we can help with lighting as part of a larger interior design project or focus specifically on sourcing and developing the lighting for an existing space.

Do you source vintage and antique lighting?

2

Absolutely. We love sourcing vintage and one-of-a-kind fixtures and often use them to bring character and a sense of history into a room.

Can you design custom lighting?

3

Yes. When a space calls for something unique, we collaborate with fabricators and craftspeople to create custom fixtures tailored to the architecture and overall design.

Can you help determine fixture placement and scale?

4

Yes. We consider proportion, ceiling height, furniture placement, architecture, and how the room will be used to determine the right scale and placement for each fixture.

Do you work with electricians?

5

Yes. We collaborate with trusted electricians and other trades throughout the installation process and stay involved to make sure the final placement aligns with the design vision.

Can you help update the lighting in an existing home?

6

Absolutely. Sometimes changing a few key fixtures, adding sconces or lamps, or reconsidering how light is layered throughout a room can completely shift the way an existing space feels.
