Custom fabrication

Studio Formichella offers custom fabrication services throughout New York City and beyond, creating one-of-a-kind furniture, built-ins, architectural details, and objects made specifically for the space. Sometimes the right piece can’t be sourced. That’s usually when things get interesting.

our design Process

01
Concept

We begin with the space, the need, and the idea behind the piece. It might be a built-in that has to solve a tricky corner, a table designed around the way a family gathers, or something sculptural that simply belongs nowhere else.

From there, we work through scale, proportion, material, and function to give the idea its shape.

02
development

We refine the design alongside our trusted millworkers, fabricators, upholsterers, metalworkers, and craftspeople.

Materials, finishes, construction details, and samples are considered together until the piece feels resolved — both beautiful and made to live with.

03
Fabrication & Installation

Once the design is finalized, we oversee fabrication and stay closely involved as the piece comes to life.

We coordinate delivery and installation with our partners, making sure every last detail lands exactly where it should.

Custom Design Work

studio formichella Specialties

From quietly functional built-ins to pieces that become the focal point of a room, our custom work begins with the same question: what does this particular space need?

Our Approach

We love custom work because it gives us the freedom to respond to the space instead of asking the space to accommodate something off the shelf.

A strange corner can become a built-in. A hard-to-find dining table can become one designed around exactly how you entertain. A material we can’t stop thinking about can turn into the detail that makes the entire room.

Studio Formichella works with a close network of millworkers, fabricators, upholsterers, metalworkers, and makers throughout New York. As a deliberately small, hands-on studio, we stay closely involved from the first sketch through installation, making sure the finished piece retains the personality of the original idea.

FAQs

What types of custom pieces do you design?

1

We design custom furniture, cabinetry, built-ins, shelving, banquettes, beds, tables, bars, architectural details, upholstery, decorative objects, and other made-to-order elements.

Do you offer custom millwork and built-ins?

2

Yes. We work with trusted millworkers to design cabinetry, libraries, shelving, storage, bars, banquettes, and other built-in elements tailored to the architecture of the space.

Can you recreate a piece I’ve seen elsewhere?

3

We prefer to use inspiration as a starting point rather than reproduce another designer’s work. We can develop something original that captures what you love about the reference while making it specific to your home and the larger design.

Can you help select materials and finishes?

Absolutely. Materiality is a big part of the process. We consider woods, metals, stone, glass, fabrics, finishes, and hardware together so the finished piece feels connected to the rest of the space.

4

Do you work with your own fabricators?

5

Yes. We have built a close network of millworkers, upholsterers, metalworkers, fabricators, and craftspeople and match each project with the right specialist for the work.

Can custom fabrication be part of a larger interior design project?

6

Yes. Many of our custom pieces are developed as part of larger residential and commercial interiors, though select fabrication projects can also begin with a more focused need.
